Careem is officially ending its ride-hailing services in Pakistan.

Careem announced that it is going to end its ride-hailing services on July 18th, 2025. Careem was one of the first apps that launched to provide riding services in Pakistan. First, it was Uber that was launched in Pakistan, and it ended due to Uber having totally and globally shut down their business, and, of course, they have shut down their business in Pakistan as well. However, the Careem case is different in Pakistan because it is reported that Careem was charging too much fare compared to the Yango and Indrive apps, where there was almost a 30% to 40% pricing difference, which was too much, and many drivers shifted to Yango and Indrive. The major shift in drivers shifting from Yango and Indrive to Careem was due to many customers leaving Careem as it was expensive and cars were also not well maintained, as it showcased that Careem failed to scrutinize the cars as well. However, it will not have that much impact, as many drivers, including customers, have shifted to Yango and Indrive from Careem.

Mudassir Sheikha, CEO of Careem Pakistan statement.

It is with a heavy heart that I share this update: Careem will suspend its ride-hailing service in Pakistan on July 18, it was an incredibly difficult decision. The challenging macroeconomic reality, intensifying competition, and global capital allocation made it hard to justify the investment levels required to deliver a safe and dependable service in the country. In the end, the Careem Rides team had to make this tough call, the end of an iconic chapter — one built with purpose, grit and a ton of relentless hustle. The challenges were real and formidable. But our Pakistan team was brilliant and fearless — bold, determined, and literally on a mission to create millions of jobs for captains across the country. They delivered significant public goods: digital infrastructure, trust, regulation, capability, confidence — all of which paved the way for countless local and global digital ventures to take root in Pakistan. Careem Technologies (the spinout building the Everything App) will continue to build from Pakistan for the region. This presence is only set to grow, with over 100 open roles and the expansion of our Falcon/NextGen programme that brings in top graduates from Pakistani universities and gives them hands-on training on building highly scalable systems. Pakistan is in Careem’s DNA — our first line of code was written here, and the country remains a rich source of innovation and talent for us, If you have remaining balance in your Careem Wallet, we’ll be in touch soon with clear instructions on how to reclaim it.
